I’m Adrian, founder of Start Woodworking Now. I started this site out of a simple frustration: most woodworking guides tell you what to do, but almost never why it works — or why it sometimes doesn’t.

A Tester’s Approach to Woodworking

By profession, I’m a software tester. That work shaped how I approach everything: take nothing on faith, find the mechanism behind the result, and verify what you can. I bring exactly that discipline to woodworking.

When I write about why pine stains unevenly, why walnut lightens with age instead of darkening, or why a finish peels months after it looked fine, I don’t just repeat the standard advice. I start from the real chemistry and structure of the wood — the things that actually determine the outcome — and explain them clearly, so you understand the result instead of just following steps blindly.

What I Can (and Can’t) Promise

I won’t claim to be the most experienced woodworker on the internet. What I can promise is something different, and in my view more useful: clear, accurate explanations anchored in how things actually work — not myths recycled from ten other sites or copied off a manufacturer’s label. Where I can, I test things on sample boards and document what happens, with my own photos.

If you want to understand woodworking — not just follow instructions you don’t fully grasp — you’re in the right place.

What This Site Covers

Start Woodworking Now started with wood finishing, because that’s where the most myths and the most poorly-explained mechanisms hide. The site currently covers wood finishing, finish removal, and stain treatment in depth — the chemistry of how finishes cure, why finishes fail, how to choose and maintain them, and which finish suits which wood species.

I’m expanding from there into the rest of woodworking over time, with the same approach: explain the mechanism, verify what I can, and skip the recycled advice. I’d rather cover a few topics thoroughly than many topics shallowly.

You’ll also find a set of free interactive tools — finish selectors, compatibility checkers, dwell-time and maintenance calculators — built to give you a specific answer for your specific situation.

My Goal

My goal is simple: reliable, accurate, genuinely useful woodworking guidance that respects your intelligence. Whether you’re finishing your first project or troubleshooting a stubborn problem, I want you to leave understanding why the solution works.
