Why Shellac Needs Different Maintenance Than Other Finishes

What Cleaning Products Are Safe for Shellac — and Which Dissolve It

For polyurethane and lacquer, isopropyl alcohol is a commonly recommended cleaning agent for grease and grime, and ethanol-based glass cleaners are broadly considered safe for most finished wood. For shellac, the same products are a direct hazard: any product containing ethanol, isopropanol, or methanol partially dissolves the shellac film on contact, producing white haze, surface softening, or in concentrated or prolonged contact, complete removal of finish down to bare wood.

Safe Cleaning Products

A soft, slightly damp cloth with plain water is the safest routine cleaning method for shellac — water alone does not dissolve the alcohol-soluble film. For grease or grime that water alone cannot remove, a small amount of mild dish soap diluted in water, applied with a barely damp cloth and immediately dried, is generally safe because the contact time is brief and the soap itself has no solvent action on shellac.

Avoid entirely: any glass cleaner (almost universally ammonia and/or alcohol based), hand sanitizer contact, rubbing alcohol of any concentration, and most “all-purpose” cleaning sprays, which frequently include isopropyl alcohol as an active ingredient even when not prominently advertised. How to Fix Heat Rings and Water Marks on Shellac

Why Heat Rings Form — and Why They’re Repairable

A hot cup or plate transfers heat through its base, raising the shellac film temperature above its 60–70°C Tg at the contact point. Above Tg, the polymer chains gain enough thermal energy to partially disentangle, and the film softens momentarily — often trapping moisture from condensation in the process, which produces the characteristic white ring once the film re-hardens.

How to Refresh or Recoat Shellac as It Ages

Why Shellac Recoats Seamlessly

Coasters and Trivets — Non-Negotiable

Spill Response

Any spill on a shellac surface — particularly anything containing alcohol (wine, spirits, hand sanitizer, perfume) — should be wiped up immediately rather than left to sit. Unlike water, which shellac tolerates reasonably well for brief contact, alcohol-containing spills begin dissolving the film within seconds of contact.

Prompt wiping limits the damage to a small area that can usually be repaired with the re-amalgamation technique above, rather than allowing extended contact to remove finish down to bare wood.

Humidity and Direct Sunlight

Shellac is somewhat more humidity-sensitive than synthetic film finishes — high ambient humidity can slow the evaporative cure of fresh coats and, in extreme and prolonged exposure, contribute to slight softening of older films, though this is a secondary concern compared to direct heat and alcohol contact.
